They surface during the rainy seaon, on sandy soils. They are kept in boxes by young kids and fed tender grass. They are not the silk producing worms or caterpillars. Akanānūru poems 14, 54, 74, 134, 283, 304, 374, Kalithokai 85 and Natrinai 362 have references to these little red bugs that look like velvet pieces. There are references to Kolli Mountain goddess in Natrinai 185, 192, 201, 346 and 362.

on bamboo, built with struggles, by wise
weaver birds,
abandoning sleep on the perfectly washed,
thick, soft, sapphire-hued hair with lovely
five-part braids adorned with short-stemmed
mullai flowers swarmed by male honey bees
along with their females,
of their lover with thick arms, who wears on
her waist strands of mixed gems and a delicate,
loose garment between which perfect jewels,
worn on her mound resembling raised hoods
of cobras, glitter, as she moves.

village belonging to Aruman of

The word Sirukudi is the name of a particular village indicated with the name of a leader in 6 poems – Akanānūru 54-14 (பண்ணன்), Akanānūru 117-18 (வாணன்), Akanānūru 204-12 (வாணன்), Akanānūru 269-22 (வாணன்), Natrinai 340-9 (வாணன்), Natrinai 367-6 (அருமன்). Elsewhere, it means a small village or a small community.

petals in this greatly sad evening.

and pallor spots on your loins!
You have become a mature woman with
the birth of our son. Are you sleeping?”
and rubbed a kuvalai blossom on her
very beautiful stomach.
She looked at me who stood there thinking
about her beauty, smiled, her smile resembling
fresh jasmine buds, and covered with her hands
her flower-like, esteemed, fine eyes decorated
with kohl.
